When the diagnosis changes everything: A difficult pregnancy

And yet, I continued: a journey through uncertainty

Continuing from the previous part of my journey,
"A Joy that Didn't Have Time to Blossom", life taught me that the sequel never comes without fear...but it comes.

There are moments in life when the heart needs all the will and love it can find inside itself.
Small daily steps, breaths, and moments of hope that keep the belief alive that everything will be alright.

So, I tried to face every day with patience and tenderness towards myself.
And then news came again that filled my heart with hope.
Life once again made room for anticipation.

Along with the joy came a faint fear.
The fear of uncertainty, the fear of the pain repeating itself.
And yet, through all this, I kept the faith alive that we could endure.

This is the continuation of my journey.
With the will, love, and strength that every woman needs when life puts us through trials.

The wait and the hope

The days had been passing with intense disappointment and sadness.
I tried daily not to think about it and to manage my emotional fluctuations.

A year and a half later, good news came again:
I was pregnant again.
This time I deeply believed that everything would go well.
I thought that nothing worse could happen to me again.

And yet… things were not as I had imagined.
The first exams were good.
The nuchal translucency scan showed that everything was normal.
A great relief.

The unpleasant discovery

However, in some more specialized blood tests, something appeared that we hadn't imagined even in our worst fears.
Trisomy 21.

When they announced it to me, I rushed to see what it meant. I had no idea. And then I understood.
The fetus had Down syndrome.

I went into shock.
"No way," I said.
"It can't be, it's not possible, there must be a mistake."
I wanted it to be a mistake.
I didn't want to believe it.

The difficult decision

We had to make a decision that I never imagined I would ever have to make.

We proceeded to terminate the pregnancy.

The pregnancy was advanced, so I had to wait until I reached a specific week of gestation.
The wait was soul-destroying and unbearable. It was like living in an endless pause.

And when they told me that the termination would have to be done through a natural birth…
I froze.
I thought I hadn't heard right.
I wondered if there was any other way.
There wasn't.

The labor lasted about eleven hours.
The pain was once again unbelievable.
My body and soul ached together.

The strength to continue

The following days were difficult…
Numb as I was, I tried to process everything that had happened and what my soul and body had gone through.

I don't know exactly where I drew so much strength from…

And in the midst of all this, I discovered something very important:
Strength exists, even when you don't feel it.
Every difficulty, every pain, every loss, leaves a piece of strength inside you that sustains you for the future.

Life finds a way…

With willpower, love, and faith, you learn to keep going.
And sometimes, patience is enough to see that life continues, stronger than before.

And my journey doesn't end here…

Thus opened the next part of my journey:
“When hope blooms again”
