When science dared and humanity kept hope alive
As a continuation of my story "The Miracle of the People Inside the Healthcare System", our journey progressed to its most demanding, most fragile, and simultaneously most hopeful point.
Where science dared something unprecedented for our country.
And the people around us kept our souls standing when everything seemed uncertain.
The days before the surgery
The decision had now been made.
And with it began a journey we had never imagined we would have to take.
A few days later, preparations for the intrauterine surgery began. Our embryologist and his entire respective team prepared with utmost care for something extremely difficult, demanding, and unprecedented.
The images, the moments, the agony, the fear, the anticipation... Everything was intense.
Every doctor was by our side, step by step.
Watching over us, guiding us, explaining things to us.
Each one from their own position contributed in the best possible way to this effort.
They all kept a close eye on me.
They wanted everything to go well for their own reasons, for science, for the undertaking, for what they were attempting.
And I wanted everything to go well for only one reason:
For the life of my child.
Deep down, I knew that this would be a very difficult endeavor.
But I wasn't going to give up.
Since it gave my child more hope, I wanted every bit of it to be on its side.
The day of the intrauterine surgery
And then that day arrived.
The day of the intrauterine surgery.
A day filled with agony, tension, and silent strength.
The preparation was very special.
I remember the room where they were getting me ready.
I was full of anxiety, but at the same time absolutely certain about what we were about to do.
When we entered the operating room, I felt alone.
Or rather afraid, inside an unknown situation that I had to face.
And yet, along with the fear, there was also certainty.
I knew I was going to do the best possible thing.
I will never forget how many people were in that room.
Doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists. Everyone present
All of them watching monitors with suspense and interest, witnessing something extremely unique.
Something that at that moment went beyond our personal story.
A surgery, a historical milestone
And everything went well.
Για πρώτη φορά στη χώρα μας πραγματοποιήθηκε με μεγάλη επιτυχία μια ενδομήτρια επέμβαση.
Something pioneering. Something exceptionally difficult.
The first intrauterine surgery in Greece was not just a medical procedure. It was a pioneering undertaking, in which a specialized operation is performed on the fetus while it is still in the womb, aiming to increase its chances of survival and improve its development.
It was successfully carried out for the first time in our country, under the guidance of a team of specialized doctors, who combined scientific expertise with profound humanity and dedication. Their love and care kept our hope alive, no matter how difficult the endeavor was.
And yet, it was crowned with success.
Despite our anxiety and our pain, deep down we rejoiced greatly for the doctors, for the effort.
For the fact that something so important had managed to become a reality.
When the outcome is not in our hands
I wish what followed was equally good.
Unfortunately, it wasn't.
Because not everything is in our hands.
Some things unfold the way they are meant to unfold, without the human factor being able to determine them.
And even at the end in that moment we never wanted to come, the humanity and greatness of some people appeared once again.
I remember one of the gynecologists visiting me in the room where I was staying.
And us crying in each other's arms.
Crying for everything we went through.
For what happened.
And for what, ultimately, we did not manage to accomplish.
Without it being anyone's fault.
If there is one thing I want to remain from this journey
The moments, the words, the actions of our doctors were many.
So many that it is hard for me to list them all.
But I hold onto something very important:
Their humanity.
The fact that this humanity still exists.
It can be found in many people, as I experienced in my story "The people who stood by us, without even knowing us"..
And it deserves to be an example.
Let these people become a light for all of us.
And let us try, each in our own way, to become a little bit like them.
